Emerging technologies comes with rewards, but they also come with risks. As businesses expand and leverage more tools, organisations need to keep up, know the threat landscape and strengthen their defence.
According to Verizon, 90%+ of incidents occur due to a failure in process and/or the human element. By focusing on IT you end up with organisations that have too many security tools that bring little to no value and not enough experts to manage them. It becomes a point where security has become its own vulnerability. That’s why it’s crucial for businesses to focus on basic hygiene (core and firewall maintenance, access management, patching etc.), governance (protocols for assessment of risk, impact to business, incident management, training). Executive engagement influences all of this, but needs to be driven top down, rather than from IT areas.
