Don’t risk it all:
Protect your organization from Cyber-Espionage threat actors

25th March 2021 | 2:00pm - 3:30pm GMT
How can you reinforce your security posture and reduce your attack surface area?

Due to the complexity and high sophistication, Cyber-Espionage is increasingly difficult for organisations to detect, and to maintain a security posture that can protect against and detect these types of attack. The big question is, who is being targeted, the modus operandi behind these attacks, and ultimately how can your business be better prepared to react to a successful attack?

According to Verizon’s 2020 Data Breach Investigations Report identified increasing trends of espionage attacks, especially in the EMEA and AsiaPacific regions. The subsequent deep-dive by Verizon in to espionage incidents identified that in excess of two thirds of espionage attacks took between months to years to detect, emphasising the ability of sophisticated (usually nation state attackers) to leave very little or no trace of their activity. Unlike financial motivated ‘smash and grab’ attacks, Espionage attackers are patient and will take whatever time is needed to progress without detection.

The recent espionage attack on the US Government, which took in excess of a year to discover, demonstrate

So, how do these Cyber-Espionage threat actors target your assets and data? Verizon’s recent Cyber-Espionage Report claims they leverage three primary actions:

  • Social engineering by targeting employees through activities such as phishing
  • Hacking systems and networks by using backdoors and command and control (C2) functions to establish and maintain access
  • Deploying malicious software, such as Trojan downloaders, to extend their capabilities

In a time where the future remains uncertain, organizations need to stay ahead of these actors. Join Verizon and a select group of your industry peers to discuss what security teams need to detect and defend against cyber spies and how to better prepare and react to breaches.
